Abuja, Nigeria – In an exclusive interview with NTA shortly after tendering his resignation, Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Sardaunan Katsina, reflected on his tenure and the reasons behind his decision to step down. During the interview, Ambassador Abubakar expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership.

"It’s a routine thing from time to time to brief Mr. President on situations and issues, and today is no exception. After the briefing, I actually tendered my resignation, and Mr. President graciously approved and accepted the resignation," Ambassador Abubakar stated.

He emphasized the rare privilege of serving under two presidents in a continuous stretch, highlighting the extended 15-month period he served under President Tinubu's administration. Ambassador Abubakar expressed his commitment to continue serving Nigeria in a professional capacity, even after his resignation.

When asked about the public's curiosity regarding his resignation, Ambassador Abubakar downplayed any serious reasons, attributing his decision to personal and family matters. He assured that the friendship and mutual respect between him and President Tinubu would continue.

The Ambassador also mentioned his discussions with President Tinubu, wherein the President understood his decision and appreciated his contributions. Ambassador Abubakar expressed deep gratitude for the trust and confidence President Tinubu placed in him, particularly in the context of the nation's security challenges.

Reflecting on his tenure, Ambassador Abubakar noted, "The encouragement I got, the confidence he had in me and in my service, the opportunity to listen to me, to read our briefing notes and our advice, meant everything to me."

As he concluded the interview, Ambassador Abubakar expressed his satisfaction with mentoring younger officers and staff throughout his seven-year tenure as Director-General, acknowledging that many capable officers are now well-prepared to carry on the work.
